JONATHAN HAMMEL

Hi, I'm Jonathan.
I'm a doctor and writer, author of Stethos & Co, Des îles et d’elle, and Memoirs of a Breast.
My upcoming historical novel, The Jewish Hospital (Skyhorse, June 2026) was inspired by the true story of my grandmother, who served as a nurse at Berlin’s only Jewish hospital to remain open under Nazi rule, the book explores love, resilience, and moral courage in the darkest of times.
In the meantime, you can find all the information about my first three novels, and my podcast, right here.
Enjoy!

“A gripping, tender World War II novel… I cried, I raged, I despaired — and I believed.”
— Heather Morris (The Tattooist of Auschwitz)

“Suspenseful to the very end, The Jewish Hospital will quicken your pulse as each life-altering decision unfolds.”
— Georgia Hunter (We Were the Lucky Ones)

“Riveting and deeply human. Hammel’s sense of time and place is superb, and the story evokes the emotional power of the very best WWII fiction.”
— Graeme Simsion (The Rosie Project)
BIO

My writing career began abruptly on the last day of my medical internship. I opened my computer and started to tell a story. Two years later, "Stethos & Co" received the Hippocrates Prize awarded by the association of physician writers.
My experiences as a general practitioner substitute inspired "Des îles et d’elle", and a few years later, it was the misadventures of a friend that pushed me to write about breast cancer; "Memoirs of a Breast" was born and traveled all the way to Canada, where it received honors from the "Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation".
In parallel, I studied theater with Jean-Laurent Cochet and composed a solo piano album, a piece of which was used by Orange for an award-winning commercial.
Based in Paris, I practice vascular medicine at the North Cardiology Center.
